A Study on the Development of the Expressway Traffic Accident Damage Model in the Winter Season

Expressway traffic accidents account for 1.2% of the total traffic accidents. They arerncharacterized by great loss of human life when they do occur on expressways. Inrnparticular, the fatality rate per traffic accident in the winter season is higher than thernaverage rate of traffic accidents in each of the other seasons except winter. The cost ofrnpersonal damage for three years (2009–2011) due to traffic accidents in winter season isrnestimated at about KRW 97.1 billion, which is about 20 times as much as the physicalrndamage of about KRW 4.8 billion. Accordingly, this study tried to analyze therncharacteristics of the traffic accidents in winter by using the evaluation indexes of unifiedrntraffic accident damage costs. This study derived potential variables through principalrncomponent analysis and suggested them as explanatory variables because driver factorsrncan be classified into various factors. The linear regression model of the traffic accidentrndamage cost in winter season was constructed by selecting the potential accident factors,rnaccident response, and human factors as explanatory variables. This study is consideredrnto be able to be used as important judgment indicators in establishing the future measuresrnto reduce large-scale traffic accidents in winter seasons.
