Electrogoniometers are commonly used as a direct measurement technique in the assessment of wrist posture. Significant measurement error due to crosstalk between channels and due to forearm rotation has previously reised questions as the accuracy of these tools. A jig was constructed for this study that allowed direct measurement of flexion/extension, radial/ulnar deviation, and forearm supination/pronation. A stepwise multiple linear regression was performed for each angle measurement using the jig-measured (actual) angles of flexion/extension, radia/ulnar deviation and supination/pronation from four subjects as potential independent variables. Measurement error and describd variance were consistent within 1 deg for flexion/extension and radia/ulnar deviation as well as forearm rotation. A mean error of 2.97 deg was obtained from the resulting calibration equations for flexion/extension. The mean error was 2.93 deg for ulnar/radial deviation and 2.32 deg for forearm rotation. These results show that the electrotorsiometer may give accurate results and could be used in conjunction with an electrogoniometer to produce more accurate measurements than previously reported for the full range of wrist/arm motion.
