In late 1991, the Agency proposed a change in the FMVSS No. 210 test procedure toallow for measuring lap belt angles of adjustable rear seats. Several manufacturers responded with comments. The purpose of this project was to develop a FMVSS No. 210 compliance test procedure for measuring the lap belt angle in an adjustable rear seat. The project also included a survey of adjustable rear seats to determine how the proposed procedure would work with these vehicles. Nine vehicles were surveyed using a preliminary test procedure. The procedure involved measuring lap belt angles with the H-point machine and a 50th percentile male volunteer. The rearmost, mid-track, and forwardmost seat positions were measured. Generally, the front seat did not appear to interfere with measurements in the rear seat. The amount of linear travel in vehicles varied from 54mm to 800 mm. The H-point measurement appeared to be an appropriate point to measure the angle, as compared to the angles measured on the volunteer. The rearmost seat position recommended by the manufacturer seems to be a good location to measure the lap belt angle in an adjustable rear seat.
