Based on the process model of Information Technology (IT) absorption, this paper makes an in-depth analysis on organizational absorptive capacity of IT, and suggests that it consists of six kinds of capacity, viz. identification, adoption, adaptation, acceptance, infusion and knowledge management. On the basis of a review of related literature and an investigation on 76 Chinese enterprises, a further examination is conducted to analyze the factors that influence each capacity. It finds out the core competence of IT absorption, which is composed of leadership, corporate culture, organizational learning, change management and knowledge management. Then a framework of the core competence of IT absorption is developed to describe the structure of the core competence and externalized capacities of the five stages. It further analyzes the key role of these five kinds of core competence and their interrelations.
