One of the new features introduced in UMTS is High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA). Among many protocol enhancements designed to maximize downlink throughput to users with favorable channel conditions is the N-channel stop-and-wait (SAW) ARQ scheme. In this paper, we investigate the performance tradeoffs in the presence of the stalling of packets within the receiver reordering buffer due to the N-channel ARQ. The impacts of different transmission sequence number sizes and mobile speed are also investigated.
