Roadway agencies in Canada are at various levels of maturity in the implementation oftransportation asset management programs and systems. While in general, provincialhighway agencies and the larger cities are more advanced as they have more resourcesthan smaller municipalities, strong leadership and champions within the agencies aremoving forward to implement comprehensive systems to assist in the stewardship of ouraging infrastructure.There is a strong movement in Canada for agencies to integrate investment planning andprogramming and move away from traditional silo-based infrastructure managementsystems into one comprehensive system. A move to systems that track assetperformance from construction to retirement and use life-cycle cost to make whole lifemaintenance and rehabilitation investment decisions. These systems report onachievements in maintaining and improving asset condition as measured by keyperformance measures.
