Based on structural techniques and graph-theoretic concepts, a new structural methodology has beendeveloped to address the problem of process and control design integration for heat exchanger network(HEN). This methodology can handle the integration synthesis task for heat exchanger networks via theidentification of the minimum control and manipulated variables that satisfy the controllability andobservability as well as they represent the best overall servo and favorable regulatory characterizationcontrol. In general, the implementation of the proposed methodology yields control configurations with aminimal coupling interaction. The applicability of the approach has been demonstrated using three heatexchanger network alternatives. This work presents a systematic framework for incorporating controllabilityand observability criteria within the process synthesis.
