Based on structural techniques and graph-theoretic concepts, a new structural methodology has been developed to address the problem of process and control design integration for heat exchanger network (HEN). This methodology can handle the integration synthesis task for heat exchanger networks via the identification of the minimum control and manipulated variables that satisfy the controllability and observability as well as they represent the best overall servo and favorable regulatory characterization control. In general, the implementation of the proposed methodology yields control configurations with a minimal coupling interaction. The applicability of the approach has been demonstrated using three heat exchanger network alternatives. This work presents a systematic framework for incorporating controllability and observability criteria within the process synthesis.
