Improvement of Green Machining Through the Use of Design of Experiments

Due to special designs, several PM-parts need additional machining operations. Green machining is a suitable route for establishing a cost-efficient process. Some papers have been published in the years since 2000 which deal with green machining, especially drilling operations. However, up to now, other than the tool shape for efficient machining operation, break outs and burrs have not been adequately measured and accounted for.rnBased on the publicly-funded project “Gruenspan”, Design of Experiments (DoE) was used to examine the edges and burrs on the surfaces of green parts next to drilled bore holes. A model is introduced which gives a prediction of the shape of the edge. Furthermore, a measuring method for describing the complete edge as a continuum is verified and validated as providing the best forecast of edge shape and for minimizing material break out.
