Synthesis and Third-Order Optical Nonlinearity Measurements of Soluble Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are of great potential for applications in high power laser protection as optical limiters and in optical information processes. These applications are crucially dependent on the third-order nonlinearity of SWNTs. We have conducted measurements and have found that X~((3)) can reach ~10~(-8) esu for soluble-SWNTs and ~10~(-9) esu for fluorinated SWNTs. These results suggest promising optoelectronic applications by further optimizing the systems of SWNTs.
