摘要

Fine-Granular-Scalability (FGS) is a new scalable video-coding framework standardized by MPEG-4 that is able to cope with the heterogeneous structure of the Internet and its lack of Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees. This paper presents a number of novel approaches whereby the FGS framework can successfully be employed in a variety of other applications. We highlight the merits of FGS for wireless transmission to enable the "Anywhere, Anytime and Anyone" paradigm, since it is able to adapt to the large variations in network characteristics and to the resource heterogeneity between devices. Moreover, FGS is a very desirable compression scheme in the context of Universal Media Access paradigm where a large number of users/clients can access any desired video stream anytime and from anywhere. Alternative FGS applications that will be presented in this paper include scalable storage for personalized video recorders and in-home centralized storage units, as well as joint transmission of multiple programs for personalized TVs.
