The private automobile plays a central and indispensable role in all aspects of modem life, making the study of automobile ownership patterns a very important research topic that has attracted attention. This paper estimates an analytical model that connects automobile ownership with both socio-economic and network efficiency parameters. To develop this model data from a detailed travel survey at individual traveler level from Athens, Greece, are used. The results indicate that the higher the speed of travel on bus routes, the lower the automobile ownership rates for riders, implying that riders on "speedier" routes tend to have less automobiles than those on slower routes. Finally, transfers between modes and routes is viewed as a major inhibiting factor for transit use and is associated with higher automobile ownership rates.
