A number of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) projects have been deployed across the United States for real-time transportation information. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is now promoting the concept of capturing these data flows and archiving them for future uses. The Archived Data Users Service (ADUS) working group set the groundwork for a new generation of data sources. Although the National ITS Architecture now includes ADUS, there is little evidence that the real "value" of this data has been tapped. This paper will discuss current and potential uses for this data, including archived ITS transit data, freight and truck data, maritime data, border crossing data, etc., and the opportunity to use these data sets for validation, modeling, and displaying temporal and spatial aspects of transport activities.
