Feature extraction and classification are the two conventional steps in any pattern recognition task. Feature extraction is proposed to take place in the thalamus by means of a new Gram-Schmidt algorithm yielding to principal component extraction.. A computational model of principal component extraction was also implemented in an artificial thalamus. For deriving the main mathematical expression a novel type of Euclidean Statistics was created.
