Application of Fuzzy Logic Technique on Improving Vigilance Performance in Cognition Processing

Previous researches have shown that situation awareness (SA) and vigilance are important and influential factors of automation system performance. Usually, supervisor perceives the good or poor signals from hardware or software, and he/she must make a choice between automatic or manual control in automation. However, there is no enough efficient information for supervisor to make a good decision. The purpose of this research was to study how the fuzzy technique can combat the loss of vigilance and keep the operator's attention in automation. Firstly, a conceptual structure of cognitive processing with relation to SA and vigilance was proposed. Secondly, a quantitative operation performance measuring model was constructed by signal to noise ratio (η, value) on dynamic characteristics of human decision-making. Finally, using the terms of the performance evaluating value (η value), a fuzzy logical alarm system was constructed to keep adaptive vigilance and SA. The results of this research indicated that the performance measuring model on human dynamic decision-making used to measure the system operating performance was easy and objective, and the fuzzy logical alarm combined with financial incentives could improve the system performance significantly.
