摘要

The practice of odontology for a long time has been explained starting from its clinical activity, far from the concept which is currently handled and that represents a wide and rich field in which three topics are contemplated: production of knowledge which has been limited to a biological focus, production of services with a curative, mutilating and individual activity in the public services and the formation of human resource, which does not respond to the population's needs and requirements. Among these arisen alternatives that rescue the commitment of the odontology towards the community, we have the teaching -service, which is a way or one of the means to favor the process of work - learning, allowing the student to be qualified or capable with the objective to solve the community problems. The results obtained, although they do not express any changes as for quantitative data, they do show positive changes in relation to qualitative data, since the students' contributions have been of great importance for the improvement of the services. Therefore, a conscious and active intervention is demanded from the state institutions, from the Universities and from the community for the advance of the process in order to achieve the transformation of the health of the community.
