Human performance in the use of computer and information systems and the wide diversity of application areas requires the existence of adaptive software systems. Most software systems are to some extent adaptive: they have the ability to change. When that change is directed in some fashion by outside influences such adaptation can be taken to be a form of evolution. Most of the knowledge of such evolution has been built up on the mechanisms and agents needed to implement evolutionary systems. However, little research had been performed into the fundamental ideas that underlie such evolution. This paper considering the evolution of programming languages provides a mechanism called adaptive compiler, for implementing the changes on the syntax of the programming language itself.
