ISAS' 99 Tools to improve Virtual Interfaces

Virtual worlds are a simple fake about the real world. Even though the virtual programming has improved a lot in the last years, they still lack of a very realistic appearance. Virtual reality is poorer over all if the synthetic images must be showed in a plain screen like monitors and TVs. However, it still offers more possibilities than the normal scheme of interaction (like windows, dialog boxes, pull down menus, etc). This paper is going to present some of the tools authors have proved must be implemented in the virtual interfaces to enhance the operators' abilities and how to design those tools in the virtual interface. These tools include virtual marks to be placed in the virtual world, virtual instruments to inform the user about some parameters, and their disposition over the screen. These virtual tools are oriented to spatial or underwater vehicles, where three-dimensional movements are allowed, but the general idea can be taken to improve virtual reality interactions.
