PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for providing a virtual keyboard are provided to supply the convenience in the input of a character by providing a virtual keyboard proper to a touch screen.;CONSTITUTION: A touch screen(110) displays a virtual keyboard, and detects a user input operation. If the user input operation relates to a directional gesture, an input recognition unit(120) calculates the direction of the gesture and a key providing unit(130) arranges a key group of the main touch region in a sub touch region.
