Strategic Vision for the Transportation System of New Beijing

Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China, is the political and cultural center of the country and the world famous ancient capital with a long-standing history. Beijing is the core city of the Huanbohai (Bohai Sea Area) Economic Zone and also the key aviation and surface transportation hub in China's comprehensive transportation system. Entering the new century, with the successful bidding for hosting 2008 Olympics Game and the implementation of the strategic vision of "New Beijing, Great Olympics" , the contradiction between urban development and transportation in Beijing is becoming more conspicuous. In addition, the constraints of available urban land, space resources, strict requirements for ancient capital preservation must be viewed with scientific development approach. The urban development history must be reviewed, and the methods of providing transportation supply must be changed. A "New Beijing Transportation System" must be developed to support and lead the urban development.
