The titanium alloy ingots made under Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) condition have some defects, such as refractory metal inclusions, high interstitial defects, microstructure defects caused by segregation of alloying elements, abnormal a phase and segregation of composition etc. Macroscopic composition segregation is the most difficult defect to be solved. We investigate the microscopic and macroscopic composition characteristics of the typical Ti-6-4 alloy ingot and obtain the principle of microscopic and macroscopic composition segregation in alloying elements. The reason for macroscopic segregation is also discussed.
