EFFECTIVENESS FOR DISPLAYING LIVE IMAGESON ROAD INFORMATION BOARD

To secure road traffic safety and, smooth and comfortable conditions, traffic information isindispensable for road users. In recent years, the information service system by new mediasuch as car-navigation and mobile phone seems to have almost completed according to thepromotion of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) studies aiming at the intelligent andinformation-oriented road traffic management. However, few studies on the conventional roadinformation board (I.e. Variable Message Sign) have been done, though the usage rate of thevisual information medium is the most frequent of those traffic information media.Therefore, to improve the credibility of the road information board, we have studied theeffectiveness of displaying real images on the board. The visibility test by a simulator displayshowed affirmative data of the merits of real image, so the future possibility of the practicaluse of the real image on road information board was found out.This paper reports the results of the first study about the perception time, visibility distance,message understandability and behavioral patterns to letters/symbols message and real image.
