TECHNIQUES FOR EVALUATING THEPERFORMANCE OF PRE-TIMED RAMP METERSUSING ARCHIVED ITS DATA

Pre-Timed Ramp Metering (PRM) is a traffic management technique. The OregonDepartment of Transportation (ODOT) currently operates a comprehensive Advanced TrafficManagement System (ATMS). ATMS collects data from various sources and archives it forlater usage. In this paper we demonstrate several techniques for measuring and assessing theperformance of Portland, Oregon's existing PRM system. These techniques can helpdepartments of transportation (DOTs) in locations where PRM has been applied to measurethe performance of their systems. Through this type of analysis, using data that are alreadybeing collected as part of an overall Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
