SECOND-GENERATION SPEED LIMIT MAP UPDATING APPLICATIONS-FUNCTIONS AND UTILIZATION

Intelligent Speed Adaptation is an Intelligent Transport System developed to significantlyimprove road safety in helping car drivers maintain appropriate driving behaviour. Thesystem works in connection with the speed limits on the road network. It is thus essential tokeep the speed limit map used in the Intelligent Speed Adaptation scheme updated. Thetraditional method of updating speed limit maps on the basis of long time intervalobservations needed to be replaced by a more efficient speed limit updating tool. In a DanishIntelligent Speed Adaptation trial a web-based tool was therefore developed to give roadauthorities the opportunity to keep the speed limit map updated. However, the feedback fromroad authorities was insufficient. Hence a new web application based on Google Maps wasmade to provide easier speed limit updates for road authorities. The lessons learnt were thattools for map updating should preferably be made on the basis of a commercial map provider,such as Google Maps and that the real challenge is to oblige road authorities to carry outupdates.
