Comparison of the effects of bentonite on the uptake of iron and selenium in rats

Experiments were carried out on Wistar rats fed a standard laboratory diet with a 2% addition of bentonite and dosed intragastrically with traces of iron chloride (labelled with iron-59) and sodium selenite (labelled with selenium-75) for 28 days. The animals were killed 3h 6 h, 1 d, 2 d, 4 d, 7 d, 14 d and 28 d postdosing. The carcass without the gastrointestinal tract and contents was measured for radioselenium and radioiron activity. Comparison of the time-dependant distribution of the tracers tested indicated that the effect of bentonite on iron and selenium uptake is different.
