Three groups of 16 male CD mice were fed different experimental diets: Group A - a standard diet (containing 180 mg Fe/kg diet); Group B - an iron-enriched diet (containing 860 mg Fe/kg diet) and Group C - an iron-restricted diet (containing <10 mg of Fe/ kg diet). After 4 weeks, 8 animals from each group were administered sc a single dose of cadmium chloride 0.03 mmol/kg b.w. and 8 animals of each group received saline and served as controls. An increase of Cd-induced lipid peroxidation in dependance on iron status was observed in our experiment. The enhanced level of hepatic GSH was not effective in protecting from lipid peroxidation. There was no consistent relation between iron status and cadmium retention in the organs of cadmium administered mice. Changes in trace element levels caused by cadmium administration in both Fe-enriched and Fe-restricted diet group were mostly of the same magnitude or slihtgly less pronounced when compared to alterations in standard diet group.
