The use of vegetation to reduce the environmental impact of heavy metals in soil through removal of the pollutants (phyto-extraction) and risk containment through immobilisation (phyto-stabilisation) in combination with microorganisms is still largely unknown. A growth chamber experiments, using a minesoil demonstrated that inoculation of mustard with spores of vesicular arbuscular mycorrziza (VAM) fungus, Glomus intraradices could decrease the concentration of heavy metals and increase the concentration of nutrients, especially phosphorous, increase the biomass productivity, influence the antioxidative system, and the stock of metals, as well. These results indicated a clearly effect of soil microorganisms on phyto-extraction or phyto-immobilisation of heavy metals and nutrients that seems to be different for each element and also for each plant species.
