'In vitro' modulation of selenium and zinc on immune effects of cadmium

Object of this study was the effect of Cd, on PHA stimulated proliferation and IFN-γ and TNF-α release from human PBMC in presence of Se and Zn salts. 10~(-4) and 10~(-5)M Cd sulphate exerted a dose-response inhibitory action, while 10~(-4) M and 10~(-5) M Zn sulphate and 10~(-5) M sodium selenite (more than 10~(-4) M Na selenite) induced a stimulatory effect; 10~(-6) M salts did not significantly affect the immune activity. Moreover, 10~(-4) and 10~(-5) M Zn as well as 10~(-5) M Se completely opposed the inhibitory effect of 10~(-5) M Cd on IFN-γ release, but only in part reduced that on PBMC proliferation and TNF-α release. The results of this study suggest that Zn and Se either enhance the immune activity or reduce Cd immune toxicity (mainly at 10~(-5) M than 10~(-4) M concentration) possibly acting with different metabolic mechanisms.
