The North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA), which operates the collection system andtwo waste water treatment plants for four municipalities in northern Hudson County, NewJersey, has embarked on a $6 million collection system rehabilitation program utilizingtrenchless technology in the City of Hoboken. The majority of the combined sewersincluded in this project consist of wooden box sewers that were constructed in the late 1860sand were found to be relatively intact. Included in NHSA’s service area are the City ofHoboken, the Township of Weehawken, the Town of West New York, and the City of UnionCity.This paper describes the unique challenges that were encountered while rehabilitating a 150-year old wood sewer in one of the most congested communities in the northern New Jersey.
