Sustainable watershed management includes balancing flood management, water quality andhabitat protection. This balance can be challenging for watershed, stormwater and flood controlmanagers when measures to control flooding can potentially impact water quality and habitat. Inorder to provide for sustainable management of the watershed, potential water quality benefitsand impacts from flood maintenance needs to be quantified. This Paper presents a model toassess and quantify potential water quality benefits and impacts due to flood channelmaintenance within channels that are also designated as receiving waters subject to stormwaterpermit requirements under the Clean Water Act. This model provides a threshold by whichmitigation measures are to be implemented, and provides specific pollutants and pollutant loadreductions to address the defined water quality impacts. This management tool can be used tointegrate any potential impacts with their overall stormwater and water quality programs in asustainable manner.
