Anaerobic sludge digestion and all its optimized variants are key processes in the quest of selfsufficientor even energy-positive WWTP. However these processes lead to the generation of Nrichsidestreams, or reject water, which could reduce the energy benefit and the overall WWTPsustainability if they are treated with the mainstream due to increasing aeration and carbonsubstrate requirements. Therefore, using an energy- and cost-effective biological treatmentdedicated to these sidestreams is recommended.A novel 1-stage deammonification MBBR process called ANITA? Mox has been developed forautotrophic N-removal from N-rich effluents. The first full-scale plant has recently been startedupat Sj?lunda WWTP in Sweden (550,000 PE). By applying an innovative seeding strategyreferred to as the “BioFarm” solution to reduce the commissioning period, the full-scale plantquickly reached a NH4-N removal rate of 1.2 kgN/m3.d with approximately 90% removal of theNH4-N load. This deammonification process is very stable and does not require any pre-treatment,addition of chemicals or heating system, making it very attractive to reduce the carbon footprintof the entire WWTP and to tend towards the energy-sufficient WWTP.
