An investigation was conducted to compare two approaches for water sampling andrntwo analytical methods for THM determination in drinking water. Results of thisrnstudy showed that the sampling protocol is critical for accurate THM determination.rnSamples collected for THM analysis should be adjusted to pH 4.5 or lower at therntime of sampling to preserve stability of trihalomethanes. More THMs were formedrnafter sampling in non pH-adjusted samples. The differences were more significantrnfor samples collected at the plant than in the distribution system. The analyticalrnmethod (liquid-liquid extraction or Purge and Trap) did not affect the quantificationrnof THMs in pH-adjusted samples. This study reinforces the need for standardisationrnof sampling protocols to prevent inaccurate determination of THMs and otherrndisinfection by-products in drinking water.
