Mathematical models can be used for the optimisation of the design of secondary clarifiers. In the present paper a procedure for the building of a mathematical model for the design of secondary clarifiers is presented. The procedure consists of 8 steps. Every step is critically presented with suggestions and design information from existing mathematical models. The importance of the design of the inlet and outlet structures in producing a satisfactory flow field, and thus a satisfactory clarifier efficiency, is emphasised.
