The design and operation initiation method has a test signal applied to the regulation path, with evaluation of the corresponding path response, for obtaining a mathemateical model for the regulation path by selection between at least 2 different mathematical models. The subsequent design of the PID regulator is effected using this mathematical model. An Independent claim for an operation initiation device for a PID regulator is also included.
