Abstract: Production refinements and pragmatic optical propertiesof the frequency converter crystal KNbO$-3$/ (KN) arehighlighted regarding its commercialization. Thegrowth, morphological orientation, and processing of KNcrystals into devices are outlined. Passive absorptiondata are presented that define the effective windowrange for KN devices. An absorption band at 2.85 $mu@mis attributed to the presence of OH groups in thecrystal, and its vibrational strength varies withcrystal growth conditions and incident polarized lightorientation. Although blue light induced infraredabsorption (BLIIRA) can reduce second harmonicgeneration (SHG) efficiency at high powers, single-passconversion efficiencies of 1%/W$DOT@cm may be achievedwith incident fundamental powers of 10 W. The abilityof KN to noncritically phasematch by temperature tuningprovides blue-green wavelengths; together with criticalangle-tuned phasematching, the entire visible spectrummay be accessed with efficient SHG conversion. !19
