Extracting quantitative information from remote sensing datanrequires analytical tools such as canopy reflectance models to interpretnradiative measurements in terms of the quantities of Interest. A newnmodel (Raytran) of radiation transfer in complex three-dimensionalnmedia, taking advantage of the latest ray tracing computer graphicsntechniques, has been developed to study the transfer of solar radiationnin terrestrial environments over a variety of spatial scales. This modelnis used as a “virtual laboratory”, to generate reflectancesnand absorption profiles of complex targets, where all geometrical andnphysical quantities can be controlled explicitly. The accuracy of thisnmodel has been established by comparison with other Monte Carlo modelsnand with laboratory measurements.
