摘要

In the past 25 years, fiber optic communication has progressed from a concept to a multibillion dollar business. Advances in optical fibers have resulted inultralow loss, below 0.2 dB/km. system bandwidths are rapidly increasing from 50 Mbit/s 15 years ago to 10 Gbit/s in 1996. Experimental demonstrations of 400 Gbit/s have been achieved using optical time division multiplexing. Further increases in fiber capacity have been demonstrated.
