AIRBORNE POLLUTION MONITORING SYSTEM for the European Space Agency

The European Space Agency (ESA) is funding a UAV payload development project aimed at Lighter Than Air (LTA) UAVs. This work complements major LTA UAV development work being undertaken on the AIRSCAN programme that is part funded by the European Union under the 5th framework initiative. The ESA programme has two main objectives; the transfer of technology from space application to the LTA aerospace industry and the provision of practical LTA payloads. As part of the work Remote Services Limited and Learian Design Limited have developed an airborne pollution monitoring system to be carried by its existing LTA UAVs and these are due to be operated both in the Netherlands and France during 2003. The technologies and the airborne pollution monitoring system will be offered on the future AJRSCAN LTA UAVs due to be launched in 2005. This paper describes the airborne pollution monitoring system currently being deployed and the technologies used on the LTA airships.
