The dynamic analyses have shown that the old weir fulfills today's earthquake safety requirements without major strengthening of any structural components, except for the supports of the steel bridge on top of the piers. It has also to be ensured that a gantry crane located on the bridge is fastened in such a way that it cannot overturn during a strong earthquake, as the amplification of the ground acceleration on top of the bridge is very substantial. The (pseudo-static) sliding stability of the piers and the foundation slab of the sill and the stilling basin had to be improved by means of post-tensioned rock anchors and micropiles.
