FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED WHEN DECIDING LATERAL SPILLWAYS WITH OR WITHOUT GATES. SPECIAL CONSIDERATION TO LABYRINTH SPILLWAY TYPE

Nowadays, it is common to design spillways independent from the dam, either in the case of earth dams, or in the existing structures where it is necessary to build complementary spillways. In both cases, spillway design is structurally independent from the dam, although the maximum levels allowed by the dam influence it. Therefore, the designer has the choice between gated spillway (barrage-type) or ogee spillway. This study is the result of a comparative analysis of specific projects and theoretical studies carried out by "Confederacion Hidrografica del Tajo" on several reservoirs. The outcome of the study has been summarised on charts, which can be useful for the designer during the first stages of a complementary spillway (or earth dam spillway) development project.
