Maleic anhydride grafted and alternating copolymers have been used as compatibilizing or dispersing agents in synthetic polymer (e.g. low density polyethylene (LDPE), polyvinylchloride (PVC)) atural polymer (e.g. hydrolyzed collagen (HC), lignin) blends which were prepared either on a Brabender Plastograph or successive operations of extrusion, granulation and pressing. Maleic anhydride grafted polyolefins (EXXELOR~(TM)) gave the best results. The compatibility was followed by processing behaviour, various mechanical properties determinations, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), IR measurements, X-Rays diffraction thrmogravimetry (TG). The biocompatibility of the obtained materials was evaluated by contact angle measurements, in vitro and in vivo tests. The biocompatibility tests assess that the incorporation of the natural polymer and of compatibilizing agents, the surface properties and biocompatibility of the blends was enhanced both in respect with synthetic polymers and respectively binary blend. The efficiency of maleic anhydride grafted copolymers as compatibilizing agents depends on the nature of synthetic and natural polymer in system and content of maleic anhydride.
