Wave impact loading on a caisson breakwater is usually much higher and shorter than other types of wave loading. The corresponding response of the foundation may be characterised by the role of the inertia of the caisson and the non-stationary pore water flow in the rubble mound. Large scale tests and tests on existing breakwaters have been reanalysed to verify the reliability of several calculation methods. Analytical methods appear to be applicable to finding the order of magnitude of the different non-stationary effects. A numerical method in which the inertia and two phases (grain skeleton and pore water) are modelled, can be used to predict the foundation behaviour with an acceptable accuracy.
