At present the final design of the North/South Metro Line in Amsterdam is being worked out. The line, 9 km long, will connect the northern and southern suburbs with the city centre. For reasons of protecting the historic city centre and keeping the disruption of city life by the construction activities to a minimum, special construction techniques will be applied. For the line sections this will imply a bored tunnel that follows the street pattern as closely as possible and which is lowered to a great depth. Consequently the underground stations are situated at a great depth as well. In this paper some geotechnical particulars of the final design of the underground stations will be illustrated.
