The innovative hybrid impact hydro-forming (IHF) technology combines hydroforming and high energy forming.It use hydro-forming to shape large character dimension of product firstly, then use high energy to form small features, such as bars, convex tables etc.This technology has a rapid development recently which has low tooling cost, flexibility and easy to operation, no damage to the surface of the sheet, and capability to form complex shapes.The present work investigates the differences between hybrid impact hydro-forming and the traditional hydroforming in forming characteristics.In this paper, the free forming process of circular disks was studied by finite element simulations and experimental in von-mises stress distribution, thinning distribution.During the IHF process,the disk's maximum thinning area are in the center and die corner radius, which is different from traditional methods.Furthermore, the feature of stress distribution varying with time have made the IHF punching possible.The impact hydro-forming has the advantages of good forming quality, efficiency and less cost to forming large scale product with small features.Therefore, the research is important for the development of hybrid impact hydroforming.It will be widely applied in aircraft and automotive industries.
