Magnetic Domains in Microstructured Thin Films with Perpendicular Anisotropy

The results of the domain observation in microstructured 50 nm thick Fe/Gd-multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are presented. Some essential details of the sample manufacturing and the domain observation procedure are reported as well. The domain observation revealed inambiguous geometrical effects. The domain configuration depends strongly on the geometrical form of the microstructured sample. The observed effects are explained in terms of the demagnetizing field distribution, which was calculated by means of a Fast Fourier Transformation algorithm.
