Mobile Source Particulate Issues: Motor Vehicle Particulate Matter Emissions Factors

Motor vehicle emission factors for particulate matter are needed for a variety of purposes. Regulatory applications include State Implementation Plan (SIP) development (for elements such as emission inventories and attainment demonstrations) and transportation conformity analysis. Highway/intersection hot spot analysis is currently not required for particulate matter nonattainment area conformity determinations, but may be needed for NEPA analysis of highway project impacts. In addition, motor vehicle emission factor models are occasionally used for special analyses such s the estimation of brake wear contributions to copper loadings in aquatic systems and the role of tire wear in latex alergen exposure assessments.
