To ensure the viability of world energyrnsupplies the recycling of light water reactor spentrnnuclear fuel needs to be demonstrated. Throughrnrecycling of fissile materials and transmutationrnof long lived minor actinides pressure onrngeologic repositories and storage requirementsrncan be decreased or even eliminated. Thernirradiation experiment described here is a firstrnstep in identifying potential fuel systems capablernof achieving the goals of a light water reactorrnspent nuclear fuel recycling and transmutationrnfuel cycle.
