RISK INFORMED REGULATION: THE VIEW FROM THE FIELD

Risk informed regulation provides different challenges for different parts of the regulatory body. For the headquarters offices, the challenge lies in drafting regulations and formulating programmes and policies which have, at their core, a consideration of, and an opportunity for, the application of risk information. For the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), this process is defined in the Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) Implementation Plan, and includes actions to develop policy and guidance in areas such as:rn1.Risk informed in-service testingrn2.Risk informed in-service inspectionrn3.Graded quality assurancern4.Risk informed technical specificationsrn5.Inspection procedures incorporating risk guidance.
