PRIORITY ISSUES IN RADIATION PROTECTION

Radiation protection has evolved substantially since the first detrimental effects became evident in the early use of X rays and separated natural radionuclides. Such evolution has been largely based on the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP).rnCurrent radiation protection is based on the recommendations presented in ICRP Publication 60 produced in 1991, which was a consolidation of several ideas that were discussed in the years prior to publication. Conceptually, ICRP Publication 60 is based on a stipulated linear, non-threshold relationship between the probability of severe harm and radiation dose at low doses, and on this basis ICRP Publication 60 develops a coherent system of protection based on controlled and accepted risk.
