The use of simulators and CBT for railway driver training

In this paper, the author examines the use of simulators and computer-based training (CBT) for training railway drivers. The introduction looks briefly at railway driver training simulator history, and typical features found in them. Some of the factors that may determine the use of simulator training are considered. Certain currently available simulation technologies, and their contribution to making simulators effective and efficient training tools for railway applications, are examined. The forms which a simulator training facility may take are also discussed. The appropriate provision of driver training simulators is explored, with reference to specification and procurement issues, and in conclusion the advantages of employing the technology are summarised.
